If high-scoring football games are your thing, the first week of the National Football League’s 107th season was highly entertaining.
Of course, it also had its share of unpredictability. In 2025, the Los Angeles Rams led the NFL in total yards per game and amassed a league-high 518 points. In Week 1 of 2026, they were the only club held to single digits via a 27-7 loss to the 49ers down under.
So what’s ahead in Week 2? It begins on a Thursday night in Buffalo and ends on Monday night at SoFi Stadium.

This past NFL season marked the sixth consecutive year that 14 teams qualified for the playoffs. So how did those clubs fare on the opening weekend of 2026? Well, seven teams came away with a victory, while seven fell short on the scoreboard. Keep in mind that there were four head-to-head encounters (Seahawks over Patriots, 49ers over Rams, Bears over Panthers, and Bills over Texans). The other three playoff teams to win in Week 1 were the Pittsburgh Steelers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Philadelphia Eagles.

Last season in Week 1, only five of the 32 teams in the league managed to score at least 30 points in their first game of the season. This year, that number was more than doubled as 11 clubs put 30-plus points on the board—led by the Chicago Bears (59), Baltimore Ravens (41), and Minnesota Vikings (39). Teams reaching that mark were 8-3 in Week 1. As for the teams that lost, the Panthers scored 37 points vs. Chicago, the Texans fell to the Bills, 36-31, and the Saints came up short in overtime at Detroit, 31-30.

That’s the number of 2025 last-place teams that came up with a victory of Week 1 this season. The New York Jets knocked off the Titans at Nashville, 23-10, while the Detroit Lions held on for a 31-30 overtime win over the visiting Saints. Those were the two games in which 2025 cellar dwellers faced off against each other. Elsewhere, the Las Vegas Raiders handled the Dolphins, 27-13, while the New York Giants surprised Dallas, 28-20. The real stunner was at SoFi Stadium as the Cardinals stifled the Chargers, 26-14.

It’s hard to put a finger on what has gone wrong in “Titletown” as of late. After getting off to a 9-3-1 start last season, the Green Bay Packers haven’t won a game since. Including last season’s playoff loss to the Bears in Chicago in which the Pack squandered a 21-9 fourth-quarter lead, the skid has reached six in a row. During this streak, Matt LaFleur’s club has given up a combined 183 points—31 or more in four of those contests—and nearly two third of those points (116) coming in the second half and overtime.

Big Blue had lost its three previous season openers by a combined 89-12 score and failed to score a touchdown in any of those games. That changed this past Sunday night at MetLife Stadium when new Giants’ head coach John Harbaugh led the team to a 28-20 win over the Cowboys. One impressive number coming out of New York’s surprising victory was that Dallas was limited to 69 yards on the ground. The Giants gave up the second-most rushing yards in the league (145.3 average) in 2025.
