The NFL is officially back. With its return comes not only our enjoyment of the best sport in the world, but also an opportunity for the players of the game that we love so much. If it seems like there are a lot of records being set in the league over recent years, you are not alone.
It seems that way because there are so many veterans moving up all-time leaderboards in statistics. Additionally, players have been around long enough for them to begin breaking franchise records. This is a weekly series that is designed to show what records and/or historic moments are up for grabs on a weekly basis.
At the end of the preseason, an article went out on which team records are most likely to be broken this season, whether it is rookie, single-season or career. Some of those make it into this power ranking. Speaking of which, let’s get into ranking the records and historic moments that could be broken this week from least likely to most likely, with a guaranteed one to take place.
The historic moments and records that could be broken in Week 1
7. Pittsburgh Steelers career forced fumbles record
T.J. Watt has been a force to be reckoned with ever since he came into the NFL. As a testament to how vital his play has been to the Pittsburgh Steelers defense over the years, he sits two forced fumbles away from breaking the franchise mark for the organization. That said, getting two forced fumbles in a game is not easy, which is why he lands as the least likely to break the record this week.
However, if there is ever an opposing quarterback that Watt could cause a strip sack on twice in a game, it is Tua Tagovailoa of the Atlanta Falcons. Despite only playing a full regular season once, the veteran quarterback has 44 career fumbles. With 78 games played, that is an average of .56 fumbles per game.
