With three weeks down in the 2026 NFL Season, slowly but surely, we're beginning to see teams propel themselves to the top of the league, or bottom-out. The coming weeks, specifically in October, is when things could really get dicey for the struggling teams.
And as we have seen in the NFL for years now, in-season coaching firings are a thing, and there isn't any reason to believe that they won't again happen this year, especially if certain teams can't figure this thing out as the weather gets colder and the 'ber' months hit.
Let's talk about three head coaches who seem to be losing their grip on their teams as Week 4 approaches.
A handful of NFL head coaches seem to be losing steam with Week 4 approaching
Todd Bowles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are now 0-3, and quarterback Baker Mayfield is going to be out for a few weeks with a dislocated thumb. The Bucs not only don't have a win, but not having their starting QB makes this a nearly impossible lift for Todd Bowles and his staff.
The Buccaneers did regress a bit in 2025 and began to find themselves on the wrong track since about midway through the 2025 season. This team hasn't had a particularly high ceiling to begin with under Bowles, and given the circumstances now, we could see a point in time where the Buccaneers are winless by the time that Mayfield comes back, and at that point, it could be too late for Bowles.
Nick Sirianni, Philadelphia Eagles
Losing to the Chicago Bears in a primetime window is fine, but losing to a third-string QB is rather inexcusable. Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni does not call plays and always seems to have his team in some sort of drama. In 2021, 2023, and 2025, they've also gone one-and-done in the playoffs, so this team also can't find any sort of consistent, sustainable success.
With this loss to the Bears, you almost wonder if this is when the unraveling begins, as the offense looks inefficient, and the defense has been uncharacteristically bad as well.
The Eagles legitimately don't do anything that well this year despite being 2-1. Sirianni is typically always at the center of it, too.
Jim Harbaugh, Los Angeles Chargers
The Los Angeles Chargers have lost six games in each of the last two seasons. Through three games this year, the Bolts are already halfway to that loss total from 2024 and 2025. Jim Harbaugh is in his third year as head coach, and the Chargers look significantly worse this year than his first two seasons.
The roster just isn't that special, and the coordinator hires this offseason have been a total disaster thus far. Harbaugh also does not call the plays, so you really have to wonder what the heck he's even doing...?
Why does this team look so unprepared each week? Why are they playing sloppy football like this? Has the game passed Harbaugh by?
With a gauntlet still to come, the Chargers may not have a clear first win on their schedule, either.
