Cleveland Browns
According to Over The Cap, the Cleveland Browns could cut Deshaun Watson with a post-June 1st designation in 2027 and take on a dead cap hit of about $41 million, which is probably worth it at this point. The Watson trade could go down as the worst trade in the history of professional sports, and with how bad the Browns figure to be, they also may be in range in 2027 for a rookie quarterback near the top of Round 1.
Cleveland can't continue rostering Watson beyond 2026 unless it somehow figures out how to pay quarterback, but he hasn't played well for about five years now. Time is up.
New York Jets
Geno Smith is the New York Jets starting quarterback, but he's now on his third team in as many seasons and has also thrown 32 interceptions over the past two years. Smith is a free agent following 2026 and is really nothing more than a competent backup option at this point.
Smith does have the arm strength to challenge deeper down the field, but his decision-making has gotten worse and worse as time has gone on. The Jets also have three first-round picks in next year's NFL Draft, so if there is any team slated to make a major quarterback move next April, it's the Jets.
Pittsburgh Steelers
Aaron Rodgers did come out and say that the 2026 season will be his last year, so there's that. Rodgers has enjoyed a Hall of Fame career, but he's about the 20th-best quarterback in the league right now and is serviceable, at best. The Pittsburgh Steelers may actually be forced to go in a legitimate route next year to find a franchise passer, but no matter what they choose, it's going to be another year with a new face under center.
