Kenneth Walker is the NFL's best offseason addition through September

Saying Kenneth Walker has "hit the ground running" as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs is a little too on the nose.

But it works.

Through the month of September, Walker has quickly proven himself to be the best addition made by any NFL team in the 2026 offseason. And there were obviously many.

The numbers he has been putting up for the Chiefs are sensational, but beyond even just good statistics, Walker has impacted the Chiefs' offense and had a ripple effect that has many in the NFL world believing that this Kansas City team is back back.

Kenneth Walker has been a stellar addition for the Chiefs in 2026

In free agency, the Chiefs signed Walker to a 3-year deal worth $43.05 million in total money. The fact that he wasn't re-signed by the Seattle Seahawks, or franchise tagged at the very least, was one of the biggest shockers of the offseason.

The Seahawks were fresh off a Super Bowl win, and Walker himself was the Super Bowl MVP. They didn't just hand him that award because the Seahawks played such a great game as a team, and nobody knew who to give the award to.

Walker racked up 417 yards from scrimmage (313 rushing) in 3 postseason games for the Seahawks, adding four rushing touchdowns. He ran for 135 yards against the Patriots and would have gotten 200 if it wasn't for a long touchdown run being called back due to a penalty.

The Seahawks bringing him back, especially after Zach Charbonnet's knee injury in the playoffs, was a no-brainer.

The Chiefs probably couldn't believe it when Walker actually hit free agency, but they did what a team in need of a spark in the running game should do: They got a deal done quickly.

To say that Kenneth Walker is exactly what the doctor ordered for the Chiefs would be an understatement, to say the least. The Chiefs had the fewest explosive runs of any team in the NFL from 2024-25, which was a big reason why their offense began to struggle.

You have to give an honorary award here to the decision to bring back Eric Bieniemy, who perhaps isn't the NFL's next great OC or play-caller, but he's certainly a difference-maker in the running game.

Getting Bieniemy back on the staff, along with adding Walker, has given the Chiefs a dramatic turnaround in their run game success:

Sometimes, stats don't tell the whole story. Other times, they paint an undeniable picture.

Walker himself has run for a whopping 360 yards in 3 games for the Chiefs, averaging 5.5 yards per carry. he already has 442 yards from scrimmage and 4 total touchdowns (2 rushing, 2 receiving).

And wouldn't you know it? The Chiefs are undefeated.

There were a lot of valid question marks surrounding the Chiefs in the 2026 offseason. The offensive tackle positions were a question mark. Patrick Mahomes coming back from a season-ending knee injury last year was a concern. The defense was revamped. The team hadn't been drafting well.

Apparently, amidst all that, it was underestimated just how valuable an elite running game could be for the entire operation of this Chiefs team.

The Seahawks have to be kicking themselves for letting Walker out of the building with no resistance. The Chiefs might be sending them a Christmas card.
