New York Giants: Is a Kam Chancellor trade a reality?

facebooktwitterreddit

As teams trimmed their rosters down to the league-mandatory 53, NJ.com’s Jordan Raanan reported the New York Giants had talks with the Seattle Seahawks about trading for safety Kam Chancellor.

Although the reports also noted the talks were preliminary, the trade would make sense.

Still, what was thought on Twitter to be nothing more than smoke has apparently been a not-so-ludicrous consideration by New York. Raanan noted the Giants had ‘serious interest’ in acquiring the All-Pro safety.

The Giants have lost a ridiculous amount of safeties to injury. The list includes Bennett Jackson (projected starter), Mykkele Thompson, Justin Currie and Nat Berhe.

Second-round pick Landon Collins suffered an injury in the team’s first preseason game, but has since returned.

New York has been looking for safety help since letting Antrel Rolle go in the offseason. The Giants whiffed on signing players like Devin McCourty, Ron Parker and Rahim Moore during free agency.

The Giants need help at safety, and Chancellor would certainly provide that help. Personally, I view Chancellor as the best strong safety in the entire NFL.

He’s an incredibly impressive player because he can essentially do everything. The 6-3, 232 pound safety can cover well, and he can hit like a linebacker.

Chancellor is the quintessential run-support safety, as he’s never afraid of coming up and making a tackle.

So “Bam Bam” Kam would be a huge improvement at safety for the Giants. He would add a lot of leadership to a rather inexperienced unit, and he’s the perfect player for Collins to learn from.

Chancellor and Seattle have been embroiled in a contract dispute, as the talented safety is willing to sit out for the entirety of the 2015 season, according to NFL’s Michael Robinson, who is also Chancellor’s former teammate.

Though I’m sure the Seahawks don’t want to part ways with Chancellor, if him sitting out for the whole year is a reality, I would assume they would rather deal Chancellor to another team and get something in return.

Here’s the caveat with a potential Chancellor-to-New York trade: the price.

The price to acquire Chancellor is going to be steep, and that might scare the Giants. To put it into perspective, Seattle surrendered a first-round pick and a starting center to nab Jimmy Graham from the Saints.

Although it’s unclear what the precise asking price for Chancellor would be, it’s safe to assume the Giants would probably have to part ways with two high draft picks.

Tom Coughlin and Jerry Reese are on the hot seat, though, and they need to make some noise this year to ensure they’ll be around any longer. It seems like they’ve been planning on adding a big-name player, too.

A move to bring Chancellor to New York would obviously be a move of the ‘win-now’ variety.

The price the team would actually have to pay Chancellor would be high, too. New York cut Steve Weatherford, Henry Hynoski and Jameel McClain. By cutting ties with those players, the Giants created more cap space to play with.

Trading for Chancellor would immediately bolster a Giants defense that was shaky in the preseason. It really all depends on the asking price.

Although in my mind, it still remains a (big) long shot, adding Chancellor could make the Giants a serious contender to win the NFC East.
