Ryan Nassib not in New York Giants’ future plans?

Despite being everything the New York Giants thought he would be, Ryan Nassib is nothing more than a backup for Big Blue.

According to Darin Grant of NBC Sports, the New York Giants, along with the Cincinnati Bengals, attempted to claim former sixth-round quarterback Zach Mettenberger off of waivers.

Mettenberger was dumped by the Titans after the team landed their franchise quarterback in Marcus Mariota. The attempted roster move would have given the Giants another quarterback on a roster already including Eli Manning and Ryan Nassib.

While the move to secure Mettenberger may fly under the radar, it’s likely a clear indication of how the Giants view Nassib. Remember, this move is coming a mere weeks after the team decided to bring in B.J. Daniels.

The Giants — luckily — are not a team that is going to have a battle to see who will be the starting quarterback. Eli Manning is the starter, and he has been ever since he took over that role back in 2004.

But that doesn’t mean the Giants weren’t planning on having some kind of QB duel this August. The general consensus is that had Mettenberger been claimed, he would have competed with Nassib for the role of Manning’s backup.

Unfortunately, that means Nassib’s future with the Giants is close to an end. He’s entering the final year of his rookie contract, and if the Giants are engaging in the comparison level of alternatives, then it’s likely Nassib leaves town next offseason.

For some, the news that New York only views Nassib as a backup will come to no surprise. After all, being Manning’s backup is arguably the least exciting job in sports, especially when you remember no quarterback not-named “Manning” has started a game since 2005.

But for others, the news on Nassib’s future will be less of a shock. Nassib’s career has been murky to this point, as nobody’s really sure what he can do. Some fans were led to believe he could eventually take over when Manning decided to retire.

To be fair, it was relatively fair to think Nassib had a chance at becoming a future starter for the Giants. The Giants did trade up in the 2013 draft, albeit the fourth round, to get Nassib. But that move was likely done because it was a cheaper option than paying David Carr to stand on the sideline with a clipboard in his hand.

He’s had time to develop and learn from one of the best of all-time. He’s looked better every preseason, which has led people to think he has a lot of unheralded ability.

However, the coaching staff and the front office knows what Nassib can do, since they see him practice all the time.

The fact that they would consider the strong-armed, mechanically flawed Mettenberger — 0-10 as a starter — as a potential upgrade over Nassib speaks volumes. Mettenberger, unlike Nassib, who has been in Ben McAdoo’s system since its inception, would have to learn the complicated offense, too.

While Nassib could theoretically re-up with Big Blue to be the backup for a few more years, it’s hard to imagine he doesn’t have an itch to compete for a starting job. He’s not going to find that opportunity with the Giants.

As it stands right now, the way the Giants have looked to add depth at the quarterback position re-emphasizes the idea that Nassib is not in their long-term plans in any manner.
