New York Giants are the worst team in the NFL

Week one of the NFL season was exciting and confusing. But one thing’s for sure; we know the New York Giants are the worst team in the NFL. Dan Salem and Todd Salem debate in part one of this week’s TD Sports Debate. Two brothers from New York yell, scream and debate the NFL and sports.

TODD:

Week one of the NFL season is in the books.

The New England Patriots are in last place in the AFC East while the Raiders, Jaguars and Browns all lost. The former was odd; the latter was highly expected. However, each of Oakland, Jacksonville and Cleveland didn’t look terrible in their respective losses. It may not be such a forgone conclusion that one of the three will be the worst team in the NFL.

That is mainly because the NFC East teams also played football games. The Eagles, although 1-0, fell down 17-0 to the aforementioned Jaguars. Nick Foles looked horrendous for the first half, and Chip Kelly’s induction into the Hall of Fame was formally put on hold.

The Dallas Cowboys somehow duplicated what Philadelphia did in its first half but doubled the destruction and carried the garbage into the second half of their game as well. Tony Romo would have given anything to just look as horrendous as Foles did. He wasn’t so lucky.

In Washington, things weren’t much better. Robert Griffin did little to dissuade people from claiming there is a quarterback controversy. He doesn’t appear to be willing or capable of running/scrambling anymore. And if that is the case, what’s the point?

And yet, through all that, through the steaming piles left by Philly’s first half and Dallas and Washington throughout, my main takeaway from week one of the NFL season is that the New York Giants may be the worst team in the entire league.

Prior to the year, I predicted that the Giants would finish last in the East. This seems like a harder title to obtain than even originally thought. However, with the performance NY put up against Detroit, just labeling it the worst East team seems to undersell it.

Simply put, there was not a single part of my beloved Giants that looked good Monday night. Eli Manning looked awful in his new system. He was missing open receivers. The receivers looked worse though, dropping balls when Eli did put it on them. The o-line blocked sparingly while Rashad Jennings ambled to a 2.9 yards per carry average on the day.

On defense, things were somehow worse! The Giants got down 14-0 before Eli even buckled his chin strap by allowing Calvin Johnson to roam free in the wilderness that was the Giants’ secondary.

Perhaps you’ll tell me it’s only one game. I shouldn’t overreact. After all, Green Bay was decimated in its first game, but I can separate myself from that because I’m not a fan. I still believe the Packers win that division. With New York though, Detroit isn’t THAT good right? It was the Giants who are that bad.

More from New York Giants

DAN:

I’m glad you mentioned the New York Giants, because of all the losers you mentioned from Week one of the NFL season, Big Blue is holding the ‘L’ to its forehead. Eli Manning is officially on the hot seat and the NFC East just became interesting for fans of other teams.

Not to ignore an obvious opportunity to jab at the Patriots, I will first say that it was both surprising and refreshing to see them stumble in game one. Sure, the Dolphins are decent, maybe even good, but the Patriots tripped and it was awesome. As a New York Jets fan, this goes a long way towards making me smile. The Jets’ victory solidified my happiness.

Now for the smelly pile of football that the NFC East and your New York Giants dropped on the field Sunday and Monday. I enjoy watching the Dallas Cowboys squirm. I also enjoy when Dan Snyder’s team in Washington DC (name omitted) fails to live up to its own inflated hype. Robert Griffin III is in for just as long a season as poor Eli Manning. Add in the Eagles nearly beating themselves and the NFC East will be amazing to enjoy from afar.

But don’t cry brother, the Giants’ season is not yet over and I’m not quite ready to label them the worst in the NFC East. Yet whoever is worst in the NFC East IS the worst team in football. It’s a fight between the Redskins and Giants, a fight I’m thinking the younger quarterback is destined to ‘win.’ If Eli Manning can’t pick up his own team and carry them on his back, then the Giants have little hope of notching victories this season.

I’ve always been a fan of Eli Manning. I loved his moxy, his ability to elevate in the playoffs when games mean more and a mistake can cause defeat. He brought luck with him, defeated the undefeated, and consistently found ways to win despite the odds and even the statistics. The Giants were never great in the regular season, but they were a strong and formidable opponent. Not this season.

The smart football move is to trade Eli Manning immediately. He doesn’t appear to have the hero in him any longer, so right now his stock is as high as its likely to go. The Giants could finish 8-8 and Eli could put up a 2-1 touchdown to interception ratio, but it wouldn’t matter. Another failed season for a former Super Bowl MVP will be the headline.

I like the Detroit Lions a lot this season, but they are not the Packers, who are not the Seahawks. The Giants are in fact that bad.
