Ben Tate should be on New York Giants radar

Multiple sources including NFL.com have confirmed that Ben Tate was waived by the Cleveland Browns after just 10 games with the team. Tate signed with Cleveland after spending the first three years of his career with the Houston Texans.

The New York Giants need some running back help, and I think Tate would provide good service for Big Blue. Peyton Hillis and Michael Cox have both been placed on IR, which leaves the Giants with Rashad Jennings, Andre Williams and Orleans Darkwa. Jennings is the starter, and he has been good at times, but he has also seen his fair share of struggles. Jennings is also an older back at 29, so it would be nice to get some fresh legs in the rotation.

Andre Williams is an interesting player, as I think he will eventually blossom into a good player, but he lacks the vision to succeed in the NFL.  I firmly believe the lack of a game breaker in the backfield hurts the Giants. While they have a two-back system, neither Jennings nor Williams are home run hitters.

Tate is a player that has explosiveness, and is very good in open space. He’s a one-cut back and is far more elusive than both Jennings and Williams. His running style is similar to Indianapolis’ Ahmad Bradshaw, and his presence would give the Giants an extra dimension that they’ve lacked since David Wilson‘s unfortunate retirement.

As a matter of fact, during the offseason I preferred Tate to Jennings, and I was hoping the Giants would finalize a deal with the former. Tate was even kind enough to tweet back to me.

Although the Giants’ season is one game away form being completely over, Tate would make a very nice addition to the backfield, and the Giants could bring him back next year to form a formidable trio. The triad would be similar to 2008’s “Earth, Wind and Fire,” which consisted of Brandon Jacobs, Derrick Ward and the aforementioned Bradshaw.

However, the one problem with this idea is that Tate said he would “be lying” if he said he was happy with the three-back rotation the Browns implemented, according to CBSsports.com. Tate would axiomatically split carries with Jennings, but if Tate did join Big Blue, Andre Williams’ non-goal line carries would likely diminish, thus making the backfield more of a two-back system.

Ben Tate probably won’t sign with the Giants, but I’ve seen stranger things happen.
