The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have cut quarterback Josh McCown after a disappointing 2014 season.

Lovie Smith and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers went out and signed quarterback Josh McCown last offseason after he put up huge numbers with the Chicago Bears in relief of Jay Cutler, and were hoping that he would be their answer at the quarterback position.

Unfortunately for the Buccaneers and McCown, the move didn’t end up working out very well.

McCown played in 11 games during the 2014 regular season, throwing for 2,206 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. He simply didn’t look like a legitimate starting quarterback, and the Buccaneers ended up finishing the season with a 2-14 record. The Buccaneers hold the number one overall pick, and decided to cut McCown as they prepare to draft their new quarterback.

It was admitting that they had made a mistake, and a new era of football is close to beginning in Tampa. McCown, on the other hand, simply doesn’t have too much time left in his NFL career. At 35 years of age, he is on the downside of his career and only has a year or two left.

There are quite a few teams around the league that could use a quality backup quarterback. While McCown didn’t play well as a starter this season, he has had success in the past.

Don’t be surprised to see a team like the Green Bay Packers or even the Chicago Bears pick him up for a season. He would fit into either teams system, and they both offer excellent supporting casts around the offense. Both teams also have the need for a quality backup quarterback with Matt Flynn and Jimmy Clausen being their backups respectively.

All of that being said, it is going to be interesting to see which quarterback the Buccaneers end up taking with the number one overall pick. Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota are the two options, and reports seem to favor their pick being Winston. Either way, they will have a quarterback that has the potential to turn into a star.
