San Diego Chargers: Top 5 Quarterbacks of All-Time
Dan Fouts, 1973-1987
Before he was a CBS analyst, Fouts was slinging passes for the Bolts. Fouts is the Chargers leading passer with 43,040 yards and 254 scores. Under the famed “Air Coryell” offense, Fouts rained down passes from all over the field.
In terms of National Football League history, Fouts ranks 15th all-time in passing touchdowns and 11th in passing yards.
While his passing and ball handling was as loose as his mouth at times (242 career interceptions and 106 fumbles), he still took the Chargers to the playoffs four straight times. He was never a pretty passer at times but he certainly got the job done. He was voted to the Pro Bowl six times, named First-Team All-Pro twice, was the 1982 PFWA MVP, the 1982 NFL AP Offensive Player of the Year and the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s All-1980s team.
He earns this rank on the list not just because his outstanding statistical performance, but because of his overall longevity and clutch abilities. He’s a Hall-of-Famer with a sailor’s mouth and a rocket-powered arm. No doubt Fouts is one of the Chargers’ best players and undoubtedly the franchise’s top quarterback of all-time.
