9). Tony Martin, 1994-1997

After the great Anthony Miller left town, Martin stepped in and took the lead receiver role in the Chargers offense ran by Stan Humphries. From 1994 to 1997, Martin caught 288 passes (ranked 11th all-time) for 4,184 yards (10th), 33 touchdowns (10th)and 65.4 yards per game (fifth).

Martin’s best season with the Chargers occurred in 1996 when he caught 85 passes for 1,171 yards and a league-leading 14 touchdown receptions. He shares the record for the longest TD reception in NFL history with a 99-yarder in 1994.

It is interesting to have seen the success Martin endured after being cut from the New York Jets practice squad shortly after being drafted in the fifth round out of Mesa State. Martin was another one of those guys whose Charger career could have been that much more successful had he stayed around that much longer.

Regardless though, Martin’s stats back up his ranking on this list. Without his clutch catches and big plays in 1994, the Chargers probably would not have gone to the Super Bowl.
