Stefon Diggs, University of Maryland

Stefon Diggs is another one of those fancy punt returner-wide receiver combinations out of the Big 12 (past ACC). Diggs is a home-grown Maryland recruit and according to his UM bio was, “a consensus five-star recruit, ranked as the No. 2 wide receiver by Rivals.com, rated as the No.1 recruit in the state of Maryland by Rivals.com, ranked as the No. 13 prospect in the nation by ESPN.com.”

With that considered, Diggs’s Maryland career has been nothing short of expected. In his three years as a Terrapin, Diggs has caught 150 career passes for 2,227 yards and 14 touchdowns. In terms of his return game, Diggs has returned 25 punts for 235 yards and a 9.4 yards per return average while returning 57 kickoffs for 1,472 yards and two touchdowns with a 25.8 yards per return average.

Not to mention, he has nine triple-digit receiving games to combine with his seven games of seven or more receptions. But what is truly stunning to see about Diggs is the fact that he was able to attain the numbers he did despite injuries and missing games. In his 2014 and 2013 seasons, Diggs missed 10 games and still wound up with great numbers. Had Diggs been healthy for those games, he would have gone for over 1,000 yards guaranteed.

Don’t call him injury-prone, though. After sustaining an injury last season, he came back against Stanford and went for a huge game with 10 receptions for 138 yards.

At 6’0”, 195 pounds, Diggs ran a surprisingly fast 40 time at 4.46 seconds. He is known for his speed, particularly in his acceleration off the ball as well as down the field for deep throws. He is another one of those players who could use some more meat on his bones and could step up his run blocking game. Diggs shows potential in his open field running with tremendous agility and sensational juke moves.

The Chargers could use a player like Diggs to make plays over the middle. His speed could become extremely important as Malcom Floyd, Eddie Royal and Antonio Gates are starting to show a bit of age in terms of their speed.  Diggs’ return abilities combined with his big-play potential on offense make him one of the top targets for the Bolts.
