Houston Texans: Is wide receiver Nelson Agholor a good fit?

In the upcoming 2015 NFL Draft, the Houston Texans will have the 16th pick in the first-round, and will be looking to make improvements.

The 2014 season was a rather successful one for the Texans, as they finished with a 9-7 record. They just narrowly missed the playoffs one season removed from having the first-overall pick in the draft.

This season, the Texans will be looking to get over the hump and reach the playoffs. Houston is picking in the middle of the first-round, and should be able to draft a player that can help them win in 2015.

One of the most notable players to leave the Texans was wide receiver Andre Johnson. Basically since the Texans have been a franchise, Johnson has been their best player, and also the face of the franchise.

After letting Johnson go, the Texans would make two noteworthy signings to try and help fill the void he’ll be leaving behind. The Texans were able to sign two wide receivers from within their division, as Cecil Shorts III and Nate Washington both signed with Houston.

Neither of the two are near what Johnson was for the Texans, but they do add some good depth to the wide receiver corps. Last season with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Shorts totaled 53 receptions, 553 receiving yards, and one receiving touchdown. Shorts does have some issues staying healthy, as in the last three seasons he has missed eight games total.

Washington is the older of the two at 31-years-old, but he has had himself a fairly successful NFL career so far. In 2011, Washington had a career-year, totaling 74 receptions, 1,023 receiving yards, and seven receiving touchdowns. In recent years, the Titans haven’t had much production from their quarterback, and that has certainly effected Washington’s production. Last season, Washington totaled just 40 receptions, 647 receiving yards, and two receiving touchdowns.

The Texans have an emerging star at wide receiver in DeAndre Hopkins, but either Brian Hoyer or Ryan Mallett will be the quarterback, and they could use some weapons around them

If the Texans choose to, there will be options for them at wide receiver in the NFL Draft. One name that would be a good fit with them is Nelson Agholor of USC.

Agholor declared for the draft after just three seasons at USC, with most of his production coming in his last two seasons. In 2013, Agholor began to emerge in the Pac-12, as he totaled 56 receptions, 918 receiving yards, and six receiving touchdowns. Last season, Agholor improved as a junior with one of the better seasons of any wide receiver in college. In 2014, Agholor totaled 104 receptions, 1,313 receiving yards, and 12 receiving touchdowns.

In two seasons as a punt-returner, Agholor was also a weapon for USC. As a punt-returner, Agholor totaled 540 return yards on 37 attempts with four touchdowns.

As a pro, Agholor could be best suited as a slot receiver, as he was a good route runner at USC. He brings the capability of being an impact punter-return to go along with his skills at wide receiver for an added bonus.

If the Texans decide that wide receiver is the position they would like to target in the draft, Agholor would be a nice fit.
