The Damarious Randall case:

While Randall flip-flopped across many rankings with Landon Collins for the top safety prospect in the draft, I’m comfortable with at least naming him the top cover safety in the draft. Randall’s position at Arizona State was one that the defense was built around, and he excelled at diagnosing and attacking plays in space.

Both Randall and Rollins are quality tacklers, or at the very least willing, and neither should become exposed by open-field ball carriers. Despite Randall’s 4.46-second time in the 40-yard dash, however, his abilities may lend themselves better to one of the outside positions currently occupied by Shields and Hayward.

Opposing offenses unfolded in front of Randall at Arizona State and the safety position afforded him a moment of diagnosis before requiring his reaction. Against jitterbug slot receivers or larger tight ends, some of his technical shortcomings could be exposed. This isn’t to say that Randall cannot prove in training camp that he possesses the ability to read and react to receivers in man coverage, but it will certainly be a hurdle for him to clear.
