Eli Manning wants deal done ‘very quickly’

New York Giants star quarterback Eli Manning saw several quarterbacks earn extensions this offseason, including fellow veteran signal-caller Phillip Rivers of the San Diego Chargers, and he would like to receive his cut as quickly as possible. We’ve all heard reports throughout the past couple of months regarding negotiations between the Giants and Manning, and while both sides clearly seem to want to get a deal done, nothing has happened as of yet.

According to Newday’s Tom Rock, Manning stated in an interview with WFAN that he would prefer not to negotiate during the regular season and would like to have his extension done “very quickly”.

"“I’m not a big fan of negotiations going on during the season. I’m hoping if this thing is going to get done, it’s going to get done very quickly. I would think both sides would want to do it that way and not have these talks continue on.”"

Ideally, it’s best for the Giants and Manning to come to terms to a deal before the start of the regular season, which will be, for the Giants, on Sunday at 8:30 p.m. ET when they take on the rival Dallas Cowboys in what is one of the most highly-anticipated matchups of the week.

A deal with Manning is the only thing Giants are waiting for more anxiously than their Week 1 tilt, especially since slapping the franchise tag on him in 2016 would be a huge setback from a cap standpoint. Manning knows he will get a deal comparable to what Rivers received from the Chargers, and smart money has him making even more money, since franchise quarterbacks are always looking to beat the next, similar deal, even if it’s by only the slightest of margins.

For those of us, including Eli Manning, who are sitting around, hoping for a resolution to this, there is optimism on that front.

According to a source close to NJ.com’s Jordan Raanan, “there has been progress between the two sides”, and this progress has made it possible for a deal to be sealed before the Week 1 game against the Cowboys.

It looks like the stress of getting this deal squared away before the 13th has gotten to both sides, and now with negotiations settling closer to a middle ground, it will be interesting to see which side gave up more concessions. Is it a team with members of the organization on the hot seat and questions in the secondary and at running back, or is it a 34-year-old QB who has been criticized for throwing too many interceptions?
