How Special is the Special Teams?
Coach McCarthy made a bold statement earlier this spring about his special teams unit. He said it would be noticeably revamped and that he would not tolerate lackluster performances. McCarthy promised to utilize more veterans on special teams so that younger players would not get caught in positions of uncertainty.
In terms of the punt return game, it really comes down to one of three options. In July’s article, we discussed what changes were coming for the special teams unit and some of the potential candidates for the punt return job. Now, it comes down to either rookie Ty Montgomery, receiver Jeff Janis, or defensive back Micah Hyde. It’s important to note that Hyde did not field any punts in the preseason but was the favorite for the position anyhow.
For kick returns, it looks like it is likely between Montgomery and Janis to steal the spotlight. Rajion Neal looked very solid early on but he turned out to be a cut-down day victim so he is out of the picture. It was largely believed that Montgomery was drafted for the very reason of rejuvenating the kick return game.
Special teams is all about creating advantageous field position for the offense. The more playmakers a team employs, the more likely they are to gain an edge for the team.
