New York Giants: Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie’s Injury Factors into Loss

Not again. The New York Giants let another game that they should’ve won slip out of their hands. And there’s no denying that the loss of veteran cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie factored into this heartbreaking loss.

The Giants’ home opener against the Atlanta Falcons got off to a rough start. Immediately following the first play, cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie exited the game after tackling Falcons stud wide receiver Julio Jones. Rodgers-Cromartie suffered a burner in his neck and shoulder region and his return was listed as questionable.

Things looked promising though when Rodgers-Cromartie returned to the game and immediately made his presence known by tackling Falcons running back Tevin Coleman. Unfortunately, DRC’s return was short-lived after Coleman’s leg caused the Giants cornerback’s head to snap backwards leading to Rodgers-Cromartie leaving the game for a second time with a concussion.

Without Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie in the game, the New York Giants already depleted secondary struggled to disrupt Matt Ryan’s pass attack and contain Julio Jones. Ryan completed 30-of-46 passes for 363 yards and a touchdown in Atlanta’s 24-20 win over the Giants. Meanwhile, Jones, who scorched the Philadelphia Eagles for 141 yards on nine catches and two touchdowns in Week 1, continued to prove that he is worth his 5-year, $71.25M contract extension by hauling in 13 receptions for 135 yards.

Hopefully, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is cleared to return to action soon because he is a vital part of the New York Giants defense. Last week, the cornerback tandem of DRC and Prince Amukamara limited Cowboys number-one offensive threat Dez Bryant to just 43 yards and zero touchdowns. Rodgers-Cromartie also returned a fumble recovery for a touchdown in that game.

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and the New York Giants have a short week to recover before they face the Washington Redskins at Metlife Stadium in a Thursday Night Football NFC East showdown. Although the Redskins have been the laughing stock of the NFC East for the past couple of years, the team is coming off a big win against the St. Louis Rams in which quarterback Kirk Cousins completed 23 of 27 passes for 203 yards and a touchdown.

The Giants need a healthy Rodgers-Cromartie back on the field soon. Here’s to hoping DRC recovers quickly!
