New York Jets: Chris Ivory may be more injured than first thought

The New York Jets have come back down to earth, falling to the Philadelphia Eagles by the score of 24-17 in week three. There was some talk among Jets’ fans about Geno Smith, some stating he should have come into the game at halftime against the Eagles. We will let that go for a few weeks.

One glaring weakness against the Eagles was the running game, as it was nonexistent. Chris Ivory was active, but did not play one offensive snap, and it showed. The Jets averaged 2.9 yards per carry on the ground, a far cry from the 4.3 yards per carry in Week 1, and 3.7 yards per carry in week two. Bilal Powell and Zac Stacy got nothing going, missing Chris Ivory dearly.

Coach Todd Bowles indicated that although Ivory was well enough to play with his injuries, he wanted to make sure that Chris was ready for the game against the Dolphins. He is expected to play on Sunday in London.

But is that in fact the case? Take a look at what Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reported on Tuesday afternoon:

"The Jets worked out five free agents on Tuesday, including three running backs – FB Henry Hynoski (Giants), Bryce Brown (Bills) and Joe Banyard (Vikings). Interesting. Chris Ivory (quad) is a little banged up, but he’s expected to play this week."

It actually is very interesting. All three of the guys the Jets have brought in are similar to Chris Ivory.

According to Pro Football Reference, all three of these guys stand at least 5’11” tall and weigh at least 213 pounds. Ivory stands 6’0″ tall and weighs 222 pounds.

Now take a look at highlights of these players, first we have Henry Hynoski:

The only tape I could find on Joe Banyard was some special teams work from college:

And finally, we have Bryce Brown:

The one thing these three players have in common is that they do not shy away from contact. Any and all Jets’ fans know that Chris Ivory does not shy away from contact.

Chris Ivory may be just fine, and the Jets are simply looking at players that can help supplement this roster. Or, is Chris Ivory more injured than we realize.
