History has been made!

The New York Giants announced today that they have activated tight end Will Tye off of their practice squad (releasing defensive tackle Kenrick Ellis in the process). With this signing, the tight end out of Stony Brook University becomes the first player in school history to land on an NFL team’s active roster during the regular season.

In May, I listed Will Tye as one of the five hidden gems among the New York Giants’ undrafted free-agent signings this offseason and discussed why he had a good shot at making the team’s roster. Now, the tight end’s dream has become a reality and Tye has the opportunity to carry over his momentum from Stony Brook to the Giants and make an impact in the team’s offense.

During his time at Stony Brook, Tye recorded an impressive 1,015 yards and nine touchdowns on 79 receptions while often facing double-coverage. His showcase of talent on the field led to an invitation to the Giants’ rookie mini-camp, where Tye impressed head coach Tom Coughlin.

"“He’s a big, physical guy. He can run. He caught the ball well,” Coughlin said via Newsday’s Tom Rock. “He can block, I think he can do it all,” he continued."

The New York Giants waived Tye after training camp but signed him to their practice squad six days later. And now, with two of the Giants tight ends out for Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills (Daniel Fells (ankle) and Jerome Cunningham (knee)), the former-Seawolf has the opportunity to showcase his versatility against the Bills’ defense.

Will Tye’s versatility bolsters the Giants’ tight end unit (and will certainly help compensate for Larry Donnell’s inability to block). It can also prove beneficial to the Giants’ offense as they try to put together a string of wins this season.

In addition to his size and versatility, Tye also has the speed to create separation from defenders.  At his Pro Day, he ran a 4.47 40-yard dash and showcased his lateral agility and quickness as he posted a three-cone time of 6.96 seconds. With these numbers, Tye would’ve ranked second among tight ends at the NFL Combine.

Will Tye made Stony Brook University’s football team history today and has the potential to make an impact on the New York Giants’ offense beginning this Sunday! Go Seawolves and Giants!
