Percy Harvin: Buffalo Bills WR Contemplating Retirement?

Despite losing to the Cincinnati Bengals and heading to London for their next game, the biggest storyline surrounding Buffalo Bills isn’t about what’s going on on the field. Instead, it’s about Percy Harvin who has been battling an injury and didn’t make the trip for an unspecified reason. It was rumored it could be injury related or personal reason. Now, it appears that Harvin didn’t make the trip because he is contemplating retiring due to his hip injury

Carucci’s report was quickly confirmed by Fox Sports’ Mike Garafolo. ESPN’s Adam Schefter, however, reported that Harvin is not considering retirement. Harvin’s career in the NFL hasn’t been the easiest. He’s faced multiple injuries and that caused him to only play 15 or more games in a season just twice. Rex Ryan signed Harvin after having him as part of the NY Jets squad a year before. He looked to be a dynamic option to complement the run game that LeSean McCoy was expected to bring to town.

Now it appears the Bills took a risk on a speedy wide receiver that is best known for his return game during his time with Minnesota Vikings. He hasn’t panned out as a superstar in the NFL mainly due to injuries to his hip and knee. His knee injuries has been caused by him compensating for his hip not being in the best condition. Sadly, injuries are part of sports and really derail people’s careers and sometimes lives.

For Harvin, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him retire after only seven years in the NFL. The 2009 Offensive Rookie of the Year’s career hasn’t panned out to much. He left Seattle after not being happy with that situation and it looked like he found a new home with the Jets. Then, Rex Ryan went to the Bills and the reunion made sense. However, Harvin could never get past the injury bug and a wide receiver with hip and knee issues aren’t usually that productive.

Despite the reports, don’t be surprised if Harvin tries to play again this season. He’s a fighter and a go-getter so it would make sense for him to try again before announcing his retirement. Monetarily, Harvin may stick it out on the roster (or injured reserve this year) before making a formal announcement. Currently, there’s a lot up in the air on if Harvin will ever play another NFL game again. Nonetheless, he showed the fans, media and other players how to be a dynamic and successful kickoff and punt return man.
