10. Al Groh

It was one year and gone for Groh, and what a roller coaster year it was for him. He was only named the head coach because Bill Belichick didn’t want to take the job in New York, and that was because of the Jets ownership being in flux.

The team was coming off of a disappointing 8-8 season in which they saw their starting quarterback rupture his Achilles, and there were high hopes. The season would begin with four consecutive wins, a rare feat that’s only been accomplished by the Jets 20 times, including that season.

With that said, the winning and losing roller coaster began with a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, followed by two-straight wins, three-straight losses, and three-straight wins. Unfortunately, the season would culminate with three-straight losses. The Jets would finish eighth in the AFC.

Being one game out of the sixth seed, the Jets missed the playoffs in 2000, even though they had a quality team. Then, after only one season as head coach, Groh left Gang Green to coach his alma mater in the college football ranks, taking off to Virginia. He didn’t get to build upon what that season was, but it was good for the brief single year that it lasted.
