Chicago Bears: Mitchell Trubisky’s words nail to John Fox’s coffin?
After another tough loss, Chicago Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky made an interesting comment. His words make clear why John Fox needs to go.
The Chicago Bears had another tough loss. They played better on offense and quarterback Mitchell Trubsiky did a good job of bringing the team back. There were also some of the same old things that happen with this team — dumb errors and penalties that cost big plays.
After the game, Trubisky had some interesting comments. I’m not sure he meant for his words to cause ripples but they did. He spoke about the offense, Dowell Loggains calling plays, and how head coach John Fox restrains the offense, via the Chicago Sun-Times.
"I know coach Dowell Loggains trusts me a lot with just how far I’ve progressed and what coach Fox is allowing us to do on offense. We’ve just got to keep getting better each week. I feel like I have."
It’s rumored that offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains isn’t the real problem in getting the offense going. Many fans have Loggains on their hit list since he calls plays. As a coordinator, however, his job is to fulfill the head coach’s gameplan. Fox, who admits he is averse to taking risks, plays too conservatively. He is a run-first coach in a pass-heavy NFL.

This is the first confirmation we have that it is Fox who has a tight leash on Trubisky. It is Fox who wants this pedestrian offense. This is damning information on Fox. The Bears are at a crossroads now. They are better than they have been in the last half-decade or so, but if they don’t develop their young players the losing continues. The way things are going, players will lose confidence in him. When that happens, well, we saw it happen with Marc Trestman.
It doesn’t matter how close the Bears get to winning games, they still lose way too much more than they win. After dreams of competing for the playoffs just a few weeks ago, they’ve lost their last three games. Now our thoughts go to free agency and the draft (and hopefully who the new coach is).
The Chicago Bears aren’t a franchise that goes crazy and fires their coaches before the season ends. I don’t expect them to do it now. This, however, is a situation that screams a change before season’s end. By doing so, they get a jump on the other teams who will also fire their coaches. Perhaps Trubisky’s comment is a sign of his leadership, and he’s letting everyone involved know that a change is needed desperately.
The point of having Trubisky play now is to have him learn. How can he learn much if all that’s asked of him his to give the ball to Jordan Howard 30 times? As we’ve seen, it won’t add wins.
It isn’t just Trubisky’s development we need to worry about. Tight end Adam Shaheen was thrust into more playing time after the injury to Zach Miller and Dion Sims‘ illness. From what we’ve seen, he should’ve been involved at least a little more than he was. He creates great mismatches on the field and has great hands. He really needs to be an integral part of the offense, someone Trubisky depends on. Also, let’s not forget Tarik Cohen and his dynamic ability.
Fox is not a coach who develops rookies. He doesn’t trust rookies on the field and he has no problem with throwing them under the bus. After the loss to the Lions, Fox defended not having two of his best players in the game, Cohen and Shaheen, in on the last drive (via 247 Sports):
"[The] two-minute [offense], not everybody on the team knows all that. We have Adam Shaheen, we have Mitchell Trubisky, we have Tarik Cohen that are playing in their eighth games of their NFL careers as rookies. They have a lot on their plate as it is, they can’t do everything. They’re definitely good young players. We utilize all of them a lot."

So, unlike their veteran counterparts, the rookies don’t put in the work to learn important aspects of the offense? If so, isn’t that an indictment of the coach? All the losing has become a habit in Chicago and the Bears need to change that habit. They need a change at head coach. Until they do so, the Bears’ losing ways will continue.
