No matter what anyone says about the quarterback situation for the New York Jets, Rick Dennison is their most important addition in 2018.

The New England Patriots are the template for winning in today’s NFL. If the New York Jets want to win, it might behoove them to follow that template. The Jets needed to fix their offensive line, and it begins with hiring a new offensive line coach.

The New York Jets announced their assistant coach hirings/promotions today on their official Twitter account. Included in those hirings/promotions was the announcement of Rick Dennison as offensive line coach.

When it comes to the Patriots, there have been three constants in their organization, Robert Kraft (the owner), Bill Belichick, and Tom Brady. Only two assistants have been on the team for at least four of the teams five Super Bowl wins, Josh McDaniels (QB coach for two and offensive coordinator for three) and Dante Scarnecchia (offensive line coach for four Super Bowl wins).

Under Scarnecchia, the Patriots have had one of the best offensive lines in the league. The Jets want to be able to do that as well. Frankly, have a good offensive line is as important as having a good quarterback. It starts with an offensive line coach implementing a plan and the players executing it.

Just look at Super Bowl LII. A great offensive line allowed an average quarterback to be successful, lead the team to victory, and win the game’s MVP.

It doesn’t matter how good the quarterback is if the offensive line is terrible. The offensive line allows a running game to be successful, which takes pressure off the quarterback. Additionally, a good line gives time to their quarterback to execute the passing game.

With the offensive line having so much on their plate, that means the offensive line coach is actually the most important offensive assistant on the staff. Their success moving forward will be based on how well Dennison can do with this line. If he can get the best out of the line, it could be the beginning of a run to a second Lombardi trophy for the Jets.
