When it comes to Mayfield there are a lot of negatives and a lot of positives. Let’s start with the negatives. As a quarterback, he’s supposed to be a leader on and off the field, and that police video of him getting chased down doesn’t look good on the résumé. The charges ultimately included fleeing the police and public intoxication. Another major point of contention on his draft profile by NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein.

"Has to prove he can reign in and control on-field edge and cockiness"

That’s proven out in this video:

Enough with the negatives, though. Let’s talk positives, because there are enough to at least balance out the negative. His career 68.5 percent completion rate while at Oklahoma was good enough for 11th all time in college football history — and even though you don’t get to a good NFL quarterback until 23rd, it’s still impressive.

When it comes to non-traditional stats, he was great in 2017. Pro Football Focus has stats called adjusted completion percentage (which factors in things like drops) and tracks passer ratings under pressure and on passes 20 or more yards in the air. He was No. 1 in adjusted completion percentage, and in passer rating under press and on “deep passes” among the top four quarterbacks in the draft.

If Mayfield can reel in his behavior, then he may be the guy the Jets (and their fans) have been looking for for decades. It’s a 50/50 toss-up with him, but the reward might just be worth the risk.
