The secondary kept getting out of position

One of the keys for the Chicago Bears defense is the play of the secondary. The NFC North has probably the best stable of quarterbacks in the NFL. Aaron Rodgers, Kirk Cousins, and Matthew Stafford are the trio who the Bears must defend twice each.

In order to survive, the secondary must play well. The Bears re-signed both Kyle Fuller and Prince Amukamara to keep the continuity at the starting spot. They have battles around them to see who makes the rotation.

Well, early on, the secondary looked shaky. Amukamara didn’t play due to a groin injury so he’s excused. The rest, however, have to do some work this upcoming week of practice to improve during their dress rehearsal next week.

The starting defense opened up with two three-and-outs and gave up a field goal after the safety. There were a few plays, however, where they got out of position but bad throws helped bail them out. There was a flea flicker in which Fuller was about five yards away from the receiver but the ball was thrown too far outside for a catch to be made.

After the safety, the Broncos moved the ball pretty well. Part of that was aided by Fuller, who was called for lowering his helmet on a play. The Broncos had the ball inside the red zone, but Case Keenum missed a couple of open receivers with overthrows.

One corner of note was Kevin Tolliver. In the third quarter he gave up a big reception but that was only because of a great effort by the Broncos receiver. Tolliver was all over him but the receiver jumped high and came up with the catch. A couple of plays later, Tolliver came up and blasted the running back coming his way. Those are the hits that if are made enough times you end up with some forced fumbles. Overall, however, it wasn’t a good night for the Bears corners.
