Green Bay Packers: 3 Players to watch vs. Redskins in Week 3
Aaron Jones, Running Back
Jones comes back to the Green Bay Packers after serving a two-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. His absence was certainly felt with the Packers run game. Jamaal Williams and Ty Montgomery just weren’t getting the job done in the backfield.
However, that may not have been all their fault though. They did not get as many chances to shine as they would have liked. For the most part, there was no run game in the second half against Chicago. You aren’t going to run the ball when you’re down 20 points and need to make a comeback. The shootout against Minnesota didn’t help either.
Jones was the more explosive running back for the Packers last year. His explosiveness was missed in the first two games of the season.
He comes back at a great time though. Jones will be able to take the pressure off of Aaron Rodgers. Any run game will be able to take pressure off of Rodgers for that matter.
Jones will be able to help with that. How much he will help is yet to be determined. It’s unlikely he starts the game. The number of touches he has will be limited too, as ESPN’s Rob Demovsky reported. The Redskins rush defense has been quietly good so far. That includes a game against David Johnson, one of the league’s premier rushers.
A spark in the run game could be the equalizer. We will see how often Jones is used. Hopefully, it’s more than what everyone is reporting at the moment. For now, expect Williams and Montgomery to get the bulk of the carries on Sunday, but if Jones has the hot hand, it will be hard to get him off the field.
