Let him walk: Geoff Swaim, Tight End

Let’s start this out by saying that Geoff Swaim actually is an underrated tight end. He’s really good in-line as a blocker and proved to be the most complete player at the position early on in the year.

More from NFL Spin Zone

In nine games, he had 26 receptions for 242 yards and his first career touchdown. His numbers weren’t great and replacing Jason Witten made things even worse for him as following a Hall of Fame player is never easy.

On top of that, Swaim played the majority of his games before Amari Cooper came to town and opened the offense up. Unfortunately, we only got two games with him on the field during their five-game win streak. That’s due to a wrist injury that ended his season early.

While keeping Swaim as a second tight end wouldn’t be bad, his injury problems have to be worrisome. He missed all but two games in 2016 and was out for most of the 2017 offseason programs with a foot fracture.

Couple that with the rise of Blake Jarwin and rookie Dalton Schultz the past couple of weeks and Swaim suddenly seems superfluous at the position. Dallas needs to find a new starter and Jarwin and Schultz need to be the primary backups to them.
