Round 1: Byron Murphy, CB, Washington

In the 2018 offseason, the Los Angeles Rams went all in with their talent acquisitions as they tried to make a run to the Super Bowl. That obviously included adding a player like Ndamukong Suh when he became available, but it also included making big moves at the cornerback position.

Using the trade market to drastically upgrade their secondary, the Rams went out and landed Marcus Peters for a second-round pick while also trading with the Denver Broncos to land Aqib Talib. The pair of trades seemingly gave Los Angeles the best cornerback tandem in the NFL, but that didn’t totally materialize.

For one, Talib was hurt early in the season and didn’t see that much of the field. When he was healthy, the results for the veteran were mixed. More surprisingly, though, Peters was just downright bad for much of the year in LA, though he too showed some flashes. With both players being potential cuts with no dead money on their big contracts and becoming free agents in 2020 (per Over the Cap), the Rams need to add a cornerback.

At the end of the first round, the Rams luck out and get perhaps the best cornerback in the 2019 NFL Draft class as Byron Murphy out of Washington falls to them. The 6-0, 175-pound (listed) corner displayed a tremendous amount of talent and upside in his final year with the Huskies and has limitless upside at the next level.

Murphy’s combination of instincts, length, quickness, speed and fluidity make him a phenomenal prospect that is scheme-versatile and able to play immediately. While he may not be much against the run coming in from the outside, his pass coverage skills as they stand are second to none in this class. He would be a steal for the Rams at this point in the draft.
