4. San Antonio Commanders

Because some of their 15-6 winning effort over the San Diego Fleet was a bit sloppy, the San Antonio Commanders come in at No. 4 in these initial power rankings, but they seemingly have the pieces to move up in a big way as the season progresses. Not only did their defense submit a largely dominant effort on Saturday in the win, but their offense at least showed flashes, despite their mistakes that were costly in terms of the scoreboard.

Logan Woodside showed real flashes with a strong receiving corps around him, but his two interceptions were the story that limited the offense to just 15 points on the day. The defense was the star of the game, however, as they registered six sacks and three interceptions on the day, completely shutting down the Fleet’s chances of capitalizing on offensive shortcomings.

3. Birmingham Iron

We’re honestly going to learn a lot more about the Birmingham Iron in the coming weeks than we did in Week 1 of action in The Alliance. That’s because they took on Mike Singletary’s Memphis Express team that, looking at early returns, might be the worst team in the league in their inaugural season. Then again, maybe the Iron had more to do with that. It remains to be seen.

Regardless, the Birmingham defense showed up big in their Week 1 victory as they blanked the Express in a 26-0 victory. Quarterbac Luis Perez was impressive, though not spectacular, in his efforts as he and Quinton Patton — formerly of the 49ers — showed a nice rapport with one another. Trent Richardson also gained steam as the game went on and, if they can build off this, the Iron have the chance to be something very nice in the AAF.
