Mychal Kendricks

This was an odd signing, but it could be worth the risk in the end. For those of you who don’t know, Kendricks is facing jail time for insider trading. The news broke last year after Kendricks had already signed a deal with the Cleveland Browns. Cleveland, believing Kendricks could face a suspension and jail time, parted ways with him soon after reports of the violation surfaced.

Kendricks was suspended by the NFL for violating its personal conduct policy, but not before the Seahawks swooped in and picked him up. Kendricks ended up only playing in four games for the Seahawks because of the suspension and injuries, but he recorded 19 tackles and two sacks in those appearances.

The Seahawks are weak at outside linebacker right now, even if they did re-sign K.J. Wright. While Kendricks isn’t a star by any stretch of the imagination, he’s a solid contributor who can fill a position of need for Seattle.

Kendricks has a hearing set for April 4, and that will determine if the outside linebacker will face any jail time. If Kendricks ends up being unavailable for the 2019 season, the Seahawks will be able to get out of his contract, so there’s minimal risk to the team’s bottom line.

However, if Kendricks somehow avoids jail time, or at least significant jail time, he could be a nice addition for Seattle. He won’t be facing another suspension either since he already served one last season. His deal with Seattle is for one season and is worth $4 million.
