The Detroit Lions had made a habit out of using high picks on the offensive line under general manager Bob Quinn. Back in 2016 in his first draft with the organization, the team’s executive used the 16th overall selection in the draft to grab Ohio State University tackle Taylor Decker.

A year ago, Quinn went offensive front once again by choosing University of Arkansas center Frank Ragnow. The 6-5, 308-pound performer would go on to start all 16 games at left guard for Matt Patricia’s squad.

Of course, the organization is not adverse to using free agency to bolster this group. Back in 2017, the Lions signed veteran guard T.J. Lang away from the Green Bay Packers and also added tackle Ricky Wagner via the Baltimore Ravens. The former was a 13-game starter that first year, but was limited to just six games in 2018. After being released by the team this offseason, the 31-year old announced his retirement.

The Lions could certainly use a little depth inside behind Ragnow and right guard Kenny Wiggins. Patricia’s club could also use a little insurance behind three-year center Graham Glasgow. In five NFL seasons with the Chicago Bears and Buffalo Bills, versatile Ryan Groy has experience at both guard and center and would make for an ideal addition to the Lions’ offensive front.
