5. The Bears keep the memory of last season alive

As the 2018 season progressed, the Chicago Bears got stronger. They started the season 3-3 six games into the season after back-to-back losses to the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots. They then went on to win nine of their last ten games to finish 12-4 and become division champs.

As the wins piled on, the hopes got higher. The Bears started putting things together. After a slow start in the running game, Nagy made adjustments and Jordan Howard and the running backs unit got stronger.

Mitchell Trubisky also took better care of the football, cutting down his interceptions. He went 83 passes without an interception in his final three regular-season games. Not bad considering the game before that streak started he threw three, and he had 12 in 11 games played.

As the regular season came to a close, no defense dominated the game like the Bears’ defense did. Teams couldn’t run against them and they had trouble holding the ball. Everything was rolling and the team had high aspirations.

Then the playoff game against the Philadelphia Eagles happened. The defense again was dominant, allowing just 17 points. Trubisky threw for over 300 yards and a touchdown and, again, had no interceptions. Yes, points were at a premium, but they usually are in playoff games.

After the Eagles scored the go-ahead touchdown late in the game, Trubisky did his job and took the offense into field goal range to give the team a good chance to win the game.

Then the double-doink.

It was one of the most painful occurrences in Chicago sports history. Everything the Bears worked for during the season went down the toilet. The Chicago Bears had their hearts ripped out and all of a sudden the season was over.

During minicamps, Nagy showed film of that loss as much as he could. Normally, people would just want to forget what happened and move on. Nagy disagreed with that notion.

He wanted to make sure the players who were there remembered what happened and how difficult it was to accept it. He wanted them to make sure that no matter how well they’re playing, it could all end at light speed. With that in mind, the players won’t take anything for granted.

It’s good to do that, even if others don’t agree. These players won’t get complacent or regress. They’ll be at the top of their game as much as possible and that helps them reach the goal of being the last team standing.
