5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

For Cam Newton to land with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Panthers would have to release the quarterback. Even if they are highly motivated to get Newton off of their books and move on to the Kyle Allen era in Carolina, there is a snowball’s chance that they would deal a former MVP quarterback to a team that they face twice per year in the NFC South.

Of course, releasing Newton isn’t out of the question, which is why the Buccaneers make this list. This season was always going to tell a lot about the future in Tampa Bay. With head coach Bruce Arians taking over while quarterback Jameis Winston entered the final year of his rookie deal without an extension in place, this was do-or-die time for the Florida State product.

To be sure, there have been flashes of real brilliance from Winston in Arians downfield passing offense. But at the same time, that’s never been the issue with the quarterback. Inconsistency has plagued him since he was with the Seminoles and, while they may have marginally improved under this new Buccaneers regime, they are still there. And this team could look to move on from Winston after this season.

Bringing Newton into the fold would be an interesting next step if they do move on from Winston. He has the big arm to execute the way Arians likes to play on offense and would be playing with the best wide receivers of his career, Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. Because of Newton’s health, it would obviously be a risk but one that could very well pay off at the end of the day for the Bucs.
