Chicago Bears: 5 Top targets in 2020 NFL free agency
5. Demarcus Robinson, WR
As I mentioned earlier, we can look at some of Pace’s moves and get a good idea of where he might go. Well, since he arrived in Chicago, he signed at least one wide receiver every year.
- 2015: Eddie Royal
- 2016: Marc Mariani
- 2017: Kendall Wright, Markus Wheaton
- 2018: Allen Robinson, Taylor Gabriel
- 2019: Cordarrelle Patterson
More from NFL Spin Zone
- Dallas Cowboys made the trade everyone else should have made
- Pittsburgh Steelers rookie sleeper everyone should be talking about
- Anthony Richardson putting jaw-dropping talent on display immediately
- Denver Broncos’ stud wide receiver might be out for a while
- Washington Commanders: Three takeaways from win over Ravens
I think that streak continues in 2020. The Chicago Bears waived Taylor Gabriel recently so that opens up a spot. We still don’t know how the team values Javon Wims and Riley Ridley. If I make a bet, I’d make it on Ridley staying and Wims leaving. That means the Bears likely go after a wide receiver prospect in the draft. This class is probably the deepest ever for receivers so they should be able to draft a good one in the middle rounds.
The one player who could step in and play well is Demarcus Robinson.
Robinson contributed to the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl run. When Tyreek Hill missed the first four weeks of the season, Robinson stepped in and did a good job. He caught 14 passes for 250 yards and 3 touchdowns. He was a good deep target (something the Bears need), averaging 17.86 yards per catch.
Robinson didn’t get a lot of attention for his work since he played behind Hill and Sammy Watkins. In the last two seasons, he has 54 catches for 737 yards and 8 touchdowns, averaging 13.6 yards per catch. Also, he is familiar with head coach Matt Nagy’s system, having been there with him during his first two seasons at Kansas City and the fact that Nagy uses Andy Reid‘s system.
He’ll be able to step in and understand what his role in the offense is and play it well. There will be no need for him to learn the system.
