Pick 23. Zack Baun. 809. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. Round 1. LB. player

Trade Alert: The Cowboys drop down from No. 17 in this scenario, taking the New England Patriots pick at No. 23 overall as well as their third-round selection, No. 100 overall

Dallas could stay put if someone such as K’Lavon Chaisson or C.J. Henderson were on the board, but in this mock, they were gone which led to them dropping down and landing Wisconsin edge rusher Zack Baun.

According to most trade charts, the Cowboys might have gotten more but this is similar compensation to what they received back in 2013 when they moved from No. 18 to No. 31 — which netted them the 74th overall pick from the San Francisco 49ers. That one turned out to be a good move for them as the 31st pick was another Wisconson product, Travis Frederick.

This time, they only drop six spots but land another top 100 selection for their efforts. They also land a player who can help them right away as Baun is already a solid pass rusher who is coming off his best season, recording 12.5 sacks for the Badgers.

With the previous regime, Dallas would likely not consider a player such as Baun since he is a bit of a tweener. He’s listed as a linebacker but plays more of a pass-rushing linebacker who would excel in a 3-4 front. With the new staff, the Cowboys seem more willing to move their scheme around to fit their players and that leads to them adding someone who can simply play ball.
