5. Ladarius Hamilton, EDGE, North Texas

As impressive as the 2020 NFL Draft was for the Dallas Cowboys, there was a position of need that they didn’t address as early as they would have liked. With Robert Quinn leaving in free agency, the Cowboys found themselves thin at defensive end.

They did find a gem late in Bradlee Anae from Utah but there was a lot of talk about them going for this spot in the first round, superficially eyeballing K’Lavon Chaisson.

They ended up taking CeeDee Lamb, who wasn’t expected to be on the board at 17 which was the right call. The only fallout from this is that there will be more competition to make the roster as an EDGE player.

Dallas does have some options though. In addition to Anae, they signed Aldon Smith and are hoping he and Randy Gregory can return from their suspension. Each player is talented but have had a myriad of off-field issues making them incredibly high-risk. There’s also Tyrone Crawford returning from injury but while he’s a great run defender, he has never set the world on fire with his pass-rushing.

That means someone such as Ladarius Hamilton from North Texas could find himself in the mix for the 53-man roster. He doesn’t have to beat all the aforementioned players but will need to show he can compete, and he has shown during his collegiate career he can do that. Playing at a smaller school won’t help but he has excellent power and looks the part of a professional defensive end.
