5. Adam Shaheen, Tight End

To say the Chicago Bears’ tight ends unit struggled would be an incredible understatement. No tight end reached 100 yards receiving. In fact, all the tight ends combined for 44 catches, 395 yards and two touchdowns. The Bears signed Jimmy Graham and Demetrius Harris together combined for 53 catches, 596 yards and six touchdowns.

One of the players who was supposed to be a big contributor on offense was Adam Shaheen. His career has been as disappointing as the tight ends performed in 2019. The Bears expected big things from their second-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. He’s been anything but big so far, registering only 26 catches for 249 yards and four touchdowns in three seasons in Chicago.

Shaheen’s career has been marred by injuries. In his three seasons, he missed nearly as many games as he’s played. He played in 27 games and missed 21.

This is a critical season for Shaheen. He’s in the final year of his rookie deal so since he’s still cheap the Bears likely give him a final shot to live up to his potential. On the other hand, if he doesn’t find a way to impress the coaches during training camp the team could cut him or, if another team makes an offer of draft picks, they’ll trade him without hesitation.

If, however, Shaheen finds a way to play well, it greatly helps the tight ends. In addition to Graham and Harris, the Bears drafted Cole Kmet. They should have a solid trio of tight ends with them. If Shaheen finds his way to the field with the Bears and plays well, the team will have a strong tight ends unit that’ll help the offense improve and possibly help in winning more games.
