NFL trade deadline candidates: Running backs

Phillip Lindsay, Denver Broncos

Best trade fit: Miami Dolphins

Phillip Lindsay is in the third year of his original contract and will likely be one of the league’s more coveted restricted free agents heading into next season. Despite starting his Broncos career with back-to-back 1,000 yard plus seasons and racking up 16 rushing touchdowns, Denver signed division rival Melvin Gordon this offseason.

With the Broncos currently sitting at last place in the AFC West, 2020 looks to be a re-tooling season. Meanwhile, in Miami, the Dolphins are preparing to make a push for the playoffs. Running back Myles Gaskin has been a pleasant surprise but, after signing Jordan Howard in free agency and trading for Matt Breida during the draft, I think the Dolphins were expecting to get more consistency from their backfield.

Lindsay is young enough, cheap enough and talented enough to warrant trading a mid-round selection for the pick-rich Dolphins

Mark Ingram, Baltimore Ravens

Best trade fit: Chicago Bears

The Bears were dreadfully exposed on Monday Night Football when they lost to the Rams. There aren’t many teams I can think of with a more bland and lifeless offense than this one. Short of Allen Robinson, every skill position on Chicago’s offense desperately needs an upgrade.

David Montgomery has done an okay job at running back — I guess. He’s a reliable pass-catcher out of the backfield but seems to lack the ability to burst through the offensive line and get the tough yards.

This trade makes a lot of sense for both teams. Adding Mark Ingram would take the pressure off whichever underachieving quarterback leads the huddle by giving the Bears an early-down workhorse who can put them in position to play with fewer third-and-shorts.

It would also make sense for the Ravens. The Ravens could use some cap savings to extend Gus Edwards’ contract and also pave the way to engineer a lot more touches for their dynamic rookie running back J.K. Dobbins.

Matt Breida, Miami Dolphins

Best trade fit: San Francisco 49ers

Miami acquired Matt Breida from the 49ers for a fifth-round pick in the 2020 draft. This move by the 49ers was seen as a maneuver to create cap space for the recently acquired left tackle Trent Williams.

However, the 49ers have had a rash of injuries to their stable of running backs this year which has included multiple players landing on injured reserve. Bringing back Breida would give them a plug and play running back who knows the system.
