25 best players to never make a Pro Bowl: 24. Steve Grogan, QB

Career stats:

  • 26,886 passing yards
  • 182 touchdowns

Best season 1976:

  • 28 touchdowns
  • 3,286 passing yards

The NFL was a much different league in the 70s and 80s. The 5,000-yard seasons and 50-yard touchdown passes were thought to be pretty much impossible. Back then, the league was more fixated on physicality and the running game, not to mention great defensive units.

Penalty flags were often considered foreign objects because they were hardly ever seen on the field. For quarterback Steve Grogan, he was amongst the best at his position, however, he never quite made the cut for whatever reason.

Although Grogan had multiple big-time seasons, he really put it all together in 1976. That faithful year would witness him throw for over 3,200 yards and 28 total touchdowns. While those numbers may seem a bit on the downside, Grogan actually led the league in touchdowns that year.

Still, he was on the short end of the stick when it comes to being selected to the Pro Bowl.

Way before guys like Michael Vick, Cam Newton and Lamar Jackson came around, Grogan was running all around his defenders. In 1976, the dual-threat QB registered 18 passing TDs while adding 12 more on the ground.

Even now, with his last official game coming over 20 years ago, Grogan is still only one of eleven QBs to have 35 or more rushing touchdowns in his career. His competition percentage wasn’t very impressive, often checking in right around 50% but back then, that was the norm. Grogan was a great fit for the NFL he grew up in and on multiple occasions, had a serious case to be named a Pro Bowler.
