Dallas Cowboys player who won’t return No. 4: Blake Jarwin

Ahead of the 2020 campaign, Blake Jarwin and the Cowboys agreed to a three-year extension worth just over $24 million. The expectation was for him to be the No. 1 tight end and his speed and ability to beat linebackers in the middle of the field were supposed to open up the passing game.

Sadly, we never got to see him in the starting role for long. Jarwin suffered a torn ACL after his first reception of the year and was placed on the IR. With him out, Dalton Schultz blew up. The former fourth-round pick had 63 catches for 615 yards and four touchdowns.

Now in 2021, Jarwin is back but he’s been unable to unseat Schultz who has 31 receptions for 359 yards and three scores. While he’s on pace to beat his own career season, Jarwin has just 10 receptions for 90 yards. He does have two touchdowns but it’s clear that he’s the second option behind Schultz.

Looking ahead to the offseason, Schultz is set to become a free agent and the Cowboys are likely going to try and bring him back. Should they come to terms with their starting tight end, they’re going to need to decide if they can still afford to pay Jarwin $8 million to be the backup. Chances are, that’s not going to be in the cards which could mean the end of the line for Jarwin if he’s not willing to take a salary reduction.
