NFL: Ranking every quarterback midseason: 29. Jimmy Garoppolo – San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers made a huge move to trade up in the NFL Draft to select Trey Lance. It sounds more and more like there was contention with the decision of which QB to take between Lance and Mac Jones, but right now, neither is their starting quarterback. That would be Jimmy Garoppolo.

There are rumors swirling the Patriots and 49ers considered a trade back this offseason, sending Garoppolo to the Patriots for a second-round pick, but the reports say the 49ers wouldn’t consider anything less than a first. Seems like a silly move now, and the 49ers are quickly pushing themselves into a corner with Jimmy G.

His QB rating has gotten worse every week this season. Somehow, he seems to find a new low after a good performance to start the year against the Detroit Lions. Garoppolo clearly isn’t the long-term solution under center. The 49ers didn’t trade three first-round picks to the Miami Dolphins just to keep Garoppolo as their QB. This is someone who took the 49ers to the Super Bowl, but that feels like forever ago at this point.

The 49ers are a disappointment again this season thanks in part to the quarterback play but also because of the injuries. This team hopes Lance can eventually be the guy under center, but they don’t think he’s ready yet. That’s how we still have Garoppolo as a starter.
