Destinations for Cam Newton – San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers traded up to the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft to select Trey Lance.  The timer on Jimmy Garoppolo’s time in San Fran officially began.

Now that San Fran is out of the playoffs, we will see the Niners trade Garoppolo in the offseason, which paves the way for Trey Lance.

In limited action this season, Lance passed for 5 touchdowns against 2 interceptions and earned a passer rating of 97.3.

Newton and Lance are similar as quarterbacks, in my opinion, and I do think Newton would see the field in goal-line packages.  The outsize zone scheme that the 49ers run would fit Newton’s own skillset nicely.

Plus, as I mentioned with Fields, Newton would provide a ton of NFC experience and would allow Lance to absorb whatever Cam Newton has for him.

When teams use high draft picks on quarterbacks, they need to do everything humanly possible to ensure their development.

The 49ers would be wise to invest in their backup quarterback, and I think Newton fits the bill perfectly.

On another side note, part of me also thinks Cam Newton could even rebuild his own value just a bit if he still wants to start for a team someday.  I’m sure spending a year with Kyle Shanahan and Trey Lance in 2022 would benefit him in hopes of landing a starting position in 2023.
