Houston Texans: Laremy Tunsil, OT

Back in 2019, the Houston Texans made quite the trade with the Miami Dolphins. In need of a new left tackle, they got a little desperate as they traded two first-round picks, a second-round selection, Johnson Bademosi, and Julien Davenport to Miami for Laremy Tunsil, Kenny Stills, and a fourth-round pick.

To be fair, Tunsil was a solid starter for Miami and started out strong for Houston. He was named to the All-Rookie Team in 2016 but never made it to the Pro Bowl for the Dolphins. Then when it came time for him to get a new contract, the Dolphins sent him to Houston.

Tunsil then landed a three-year $66 million extension with nearly $58 million of that guaranteed. He responded by making two Pro Bowls in a row but the problem was that they severely depleted their draft capital in this trade.

So rather than building talent around Deshaun Watson — who was on the rise at the time — they had to start chopping down salary. They traded DeAndre Hopkins and had no picks to adequately replace him. This led to Watson being angry and eventually wanting out (his off-field concerns hadn’t surfaced at this point, so it was a huge problem).

The Texans can start to rebuild now that they landed three first-round picks. But that rebuild likely won’t include Tunsil who they overpaid for in the first place.
