Atlanta Falcons: Deion Jones, LB

In 2019, the Atlanta Falcons signed linebacker Deion Jones to a four-year deal worth $57 million with $34 million being guaranteed. His overall deal might not be the most expensive on the team (Grady Jarrett signed a three-year deal worth $50.47 million) but in 2022, he has the biggest cap hit on the team at just over $20 million.

When looking at the numbers alone, this doesn’t seem that bad. Jones is a stat machine, recording 652 tackles, 11 picks, and five defensive touchdowns in his first six seasons in the league. Even this past year after Dean Pees switched up the defensive scheme, Jones had 137 tackles.

But when you look deeper, you see some glaring issues. For example, Jones was asked to drop into coverage more this past season and he struggled mightily. Opposing quarterbacks targeted him 84 times and he surrendered 66 completions (78.6 percent) for 584 yards. Even worse, the receivers he was covering had 422 yards after the catch, so it wasn’t as if he was making the tackle right after the completion.

Atlanta was rumored to be shopping Jones and in the end, that could be best for him — not just the team. He’s not a bad player but he’s not a great fit in the team’s current scheme and could benefit from landing somewhere he’s more comfortable.
