NFL Week 1 overreaction no. 3: Geno Smith was the right guy for the job

Everyone raised an eyebrow when the Seattle Seahawks opted to not draft a quarterback. Another brow was raised when they didn’t make a move for Baker Mayfield or another starting quarterback. Turns out they had their guy all along. Geno Smith put the Seahawks on his back as he looked to silence all the doubters, he did. Smith has been with the Seahawks for two seasons learning behind one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.

When he got his time to shine, he took the spotlight and ran with it, literally. He escaped the rush showing in-pocket athleticism, and he made some plays on the move. Smith finished 23/28 with two touchdowns. This was only the beginning for Smith.

Smith played one of the better secondaries in the NFL. DK Metcalf barely scratched the surface. On the other side, he has Tyle Lockett, who can take the top off a defense or take a quick slant 50-yards. Noah Fant is an immensely talented tight end who is ready to be unleashed. It’s not that difficult to imagine him becoming Smith’s favorite target.

Rashaad Penny is looking to make a statement, and he looked good in week one. Smith is 31 years young and could end up getting a three-year deal from the Seahawks.
