New York Jets quarterback options for 2023 and beyond

Lamar Jackson – 2023 free agent

Lamar Jackson’s situation is interesting as he does not have an agent and apparently no longer is discussing a contract extension with the team since the regular season started.  He’s in his fifth year and is playing on his fifth-year option with the team.

The Ravens are playing a dangerous game with Jackson and, as far as we know, have not made a good enough offer for Jackson to agree to.  He is a free agent at the end of the season and I would assume that the Ravens would get first dibs on offering him an extension, but you never know.

Jackson playing in a Shanahan-style offense and being able to function as another ball carrier would be an absolute nightmare for opposing defenses to deal with.  Again, the Jets’ roster is prepared to add a quarterback and hit the ground running, and Jackson would definitely provide that.

Derek Carr – Trade

So I think this could be an option for the Jets.  The Raiders are enduring another losing season.  They’re 2-5 and clearly not nearly as good as their 10-7 2021 season.  They are simply going backward, and they haven’t been able to do much since drafting Derek Carr.

They’ve got through numerous coaching changes and rosters, but Carr has been the lone factor.  Perhaps he isn’t truly a franchise quarterback, but he does have 202 touchdown passes and 90 interceptions during his career.  He’s also thrown for 4,000 yards in four straight seasons.

Carr is a solid quarterback, but not elite.  However, perhaps a change of scenery in a much more stable situation with a solid front office and coaching presence would be enough for Carr to break through.

To me, these are the four biggest options that the Jets would have.  I do think you could make an argument for a few more players that could become available like Carson Wentz and/or Jared Goff.  There’s also a tier below that the Jets might be comfortable targeting Marcus Mariota, Mitchell Trubisky, and Teddy Bridgewater.

The point is, New York desperately needs a QB upgrade.  Zach Wilson is not it.
