Even if Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith was always the #1 prospect in the 2027 NFL Draft, the quarterback position trumps all in the NFL.
Just one month into the 2026 college football season, it's become abundantly clear that no one is touching Smith at the top of this class...not even at the quarterback position.
After his most recent dominating effort, Smith has entrenched himself as the top prize of the 2027 NFL Draft, which still looks like a really good class. And even with a lot of season left to be played, the #1 overall pick in the 2027 Draft has very obviously revealed himself.

Against Illinois, Smith caught 12 passes for 217 yards and 4 touchdowns. Through four games so far this season, he has 617 yards and 7 touchdown catches, averaging 18.7 yards per reception and 154.3 yards per game.
We're seeing a level of dominance from Smith that is atypical, even for a school like Ohio State which constantly has top-tier wide receiver prospects coming through the program.
The term "generational" gets thrown around far too freely these days, but Smith is a truly generational-level prospect.
It's rare to see players at his size (6-foot-4, 222 pounds) with such speed, explosiveness, and change of direction. At just 20 years old, Smith is showing the refined skills at the receiver position of someone who has been in the NFL for years already.

When you see a prospect like this, you already know that this is the type of player who is going to hit the ground running and be an immediate impact player on Sundays. Of course, you have to be careful not to heap too much on a prospect before they ever take a snap in the NFL.
Remember when Marvin Harrison Jr. was supposed to immediately come in and dominate the league?
Things don't always work out, but in a draft class with plenty of blue-chip prospects, Smith is easily going to be the most coveted player. NFL teams obviously look for talent, upside, and positional value, but one of the rarest things you can find in a prospect with such elite skills is a high floor.
With Smith, it feels like there is absolutely no risk attached to picking him, because there are no red flags in his game. This is what baseball scouts would call a "five-tool" prospect.
The top of the 2027 NFL Draft order obviously has yet to fully sort itself out, and it will be quite some time before that happens. Regardless of who ends up with the #1 overall pick, it just feels like that team will have one of the easiest decisions since Andrew Luck was coming out of Stanford, or since Myles Garrett was coming out of Texas A&M.
Smith is on that level as a prospect, and even teams that need long-term answers at quarterback will have him so much higher on their draft boards that he'll be a slam dunk at #1 overall no matter what.
