We're still months away from the 2027 NFL Draft, but that won't stop us from taking a look ahead and seeing what teams are picking with the highest slots. The NFL Draft is the one tried and true way to sustain success in this league.
While teams can build a lot of positions out through free agency, the main way to win Super Bowls is to build through the NFL Draft, especially on offense. There is a ton of wiggle room to build a defense through free agency, but front office's are prioritizing drafting and developing.
With Week 3 just about here, let's dive into how the top of the NFL Draft order looks.
Updated draft order for the 2027 NFL Draft as Week 3 approaches
1. Houston Texans (0-2)
Houston did begin the 2025 season 0-3 before finishing 12-2 and making the playoffs. I would personally be shocked if the Texans didn't start winning some games very soon, but as of now, they hold the first overall pick.
If this happened, we would have seen a historic regression across the board, and it would surely lead to the Texans selecting the top-rated QB.
However, Houston is very likely picking somewhere in the late-teens or 20s when it's all said and done.
2. Tennessee Titans (0-2)
The Tennessee Titans might end up picking high again. It's been a rough start for the team in year two of the Cam Ward era, but the roster just isn't there yet, and Ward is still very early on in his career. Ideally, the Titans show signs of being better than last year and at least set the foundation for a 2027 breakout season.
But even in that evet, Tennessee is probably still picking quite high in the 2027 draft.
3. New York Jets (via IND, 0-2)
Right now, the New York Jets would pick third overall due to holding the Indianapolis Colts first-round pick this year due to the major Sauce Gardner trade from a year ago. This would be an ideal situation for the Jets, as they have a trio of first-round picks and could really make a major move in the NFL Draft if there is a quarterback they like who is in range.
The Jets have to be smiling ear to ear right now, as this isn't the only top-10 pick the Jets have in 2027.
Things will likely change as the weeks go on, but with the Colts starting out pretty sloppy, the Jets own a top-3 pick. New York does have some nice young talent on offense, but they could use some more foundational pieces on the defensive side of the ball, so if they ended up not using their other first-rounders to trade up, they could, realistically, end up with a potential franchise QB and another foundational piece on the other side of the ball.
