We've been saying it all week, but Week 8 of the 2026 NFL season is an absolutely pivotal week, for a number of reasons.
Of course, there are marquee matchups on the docket with division rivalries in both conferences, a huge matchup in Buffalo between the Bills and Ravens, and an inter-conference matchup between the Bears and Seahawks that is already looking like a possible Super Bowl preview.
There is obviously a lot at stake this week in terms of division and playoff races, but there are also teams whose strategies for the NFL trade deadline could shift in the event of a win (or loss) on Sunday.
Let's look at three teams who could become instant "buyers" at the trade deadline if they can pick up a win in Week 8.
3 teams that could become big buyers at the trade deadline with a win in Week 8 action
1. Atlanta Falcons
The Atlanta Falcons are entering Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (on the road) with a 3-4 record. Although the Falcons have a losing record at this point, they are 3-2 since Michael Penix Jr. returned to the lineup, and one of those two losses included a game-ending interception by Tua Tagovailoa.
In other words, the play of Penix has to have inspired a little bit of confidence in the Falcons' front office that they have a team that can at least contend for a division title, especially after watching the Carolina Panthers get whooped on Thursday night (and fire their defensive coordinator the next day).
The window is wide open for the Falcons in the NFC South, and a win on Sunday could push them one step closer to taking 1st place.
The Falcons will already be adding James Pearce Jr. to the pass rush next week with his 8-game suspension almost finished. Why not go big and get another weapon for the offense like Brian Thomas Jr., or even add another piece to the defensive front?
2. Detroit Lions
If the Detroit Lions can beat the undefeated Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, I don't think there is any question that GM Brad Holmes will dive headfirst into "F Them Picks" mode.
The NFC North has only gotten better lately. The Bears added Jeffery Simmons to their defensive front. The Packers will be welcoming Micah Parsons back to practice next week. The Vikings have the best defense in the NFL right now.
The Lions are simply too good to just hope for the best on the defensive side of the ball. Whether they go after a big fish like Maxx Crosby or someone else, a win on Sunday should push this team into buyer mode at the trade deadline.
3. Dallas Cowboys
This makes it three straight NFC teams, and maybe the Dallas Cowboys are the least surprising name we could possibly have on this list.
Jerry Jones has been ready and willing to make trades more than anyone else in the league over the past few seasons.
If the Cowboys can get back to .500 with a win against the Arizona Cardinals (in Dallas) on Sunday, then I don't think there's any way Jones is going to sit on his hands. The Cowboys still need a lot of help defensively, and there are some players out there they could go after.
The Cowboys need help off the edge right now, averaging just 1.4 sacks per game in 2026 (28th in the NFL). Even a modest move like Khalil Mack of the Chargers would help, but you already know Jones is going to be after a big splash.
